The three variables that set the price
A galvanized steel grating quotation moves with three things. The first is bearing bar size: a 25 × 3 mm bar and a 65 × 5 mm bar are the same footprint of material but a very different weight per square metre. The second is pitch: closing the bearing bar spacing from 40 mm to 25 mm adds bars to every panel. The third is the coating: hot dip galvanising after fabrication protects the cut ends and welds, which electro-galvanised sheet cannot do. Two quotations that look alike on the drawing can differ substantially in weight, and weight is what the mill prices against.

Because a galvanized steel grating panel is cut to the opening rather than to a stock sheet, the same product serves as a walking surface, a cover and a screen. That flexibility is why it appears across a building rather than in one place.

In building work the same panel often serves two roles. A galvanized steel grating platform provides the walking surface and the ventilation for the space below it at the same time, which is why plant rooms and service galleries use it instead of a solid deck. As a ceiling or screening panel it allows air movement above a walkway while closing the visual gap, and it does so without the maintenance that a painted soffit would need.
Finishing and site handling
On a galvanized steel grating panel, hot dip galvanising is applied after the panel is welded and cut, so the zinc covers the welds and the panel edges. That is the difference between a grating that stays grey in a damp plant room and one that starts rusting along every cut within a season. On site the panels are lifted by sling rather than by hooking a bearing bar, because a single bar is not designed to carry the panel weight on its own.
